The standard challenge coin size is 1.75 inches (44 mm) in diameter, and most challenge coins are between 1.5 and 2 inches across and about 3 mm thick. Smaller coins are easier to carry and cost less, while 2.5–3 inch coins are used for commander’s coins, awards and display pieces. Use the size chart below to choose the right size for your design and budget.

| Diameter | In mm | Approx. weight* | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5″ | 38 mm | 0.8 oz (23 g) | Giveaways, events and simple logos on a budget |
| 1.75″ | 44 mm | 1.1 oz (31 g) | The most popular size for military, police, fire and club coins |
| 2″ | 51 mm | 1.4 oz (41 g) | Detailed designs, corporate coins and awards |
| 2.5″ | 64 mm | 2.2 oz (64 g) | Commander’s coins, special awards and milestones |
| 3″ and up | 76 mm+ | 3.2 oz (92 g)+ | Display pieces, anniversaries and limited editions |
*Weights are for a 3 mm zinc alloy coin. Brass coins are about 25% heavier, and 3D relief, cut-outs and enamel change the final weight.
There is no official regulation size, but 1.75 inches has become the standard because it fits comfortably in a pocket and still leaves room for a crest, a motto and a ring of text. Most military units choose 1.75″ or 2″, and larger 2.5″–3″ coins are usually reserved for commanders, senior leaders and special occasions. See our custom military challenge coins.
| Thickness | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 mm (0.08″) | Light and slim | Large giveaways, mailing and budget orders |
| 3 mm (0.12″) | Standard, solid in the hand | Most challenge coins |
| 4–5 mm (0.16–0.2″) | Heavy and premium | 3D relief, edge engraving and high-end awards |
A thicker coin resists bending, feels more valuable and leaves room for edge engraving or rope and diamond-cut edges. A thinner coin keeps weight and shipping costs down.
Not sure how big a challenge coin is? Compare it with coins you already know:
A standard 1.75″ challenge coin is almost twice as wide as a quarter and noticeably larger than a half dollar.

A simple logo works on a 1.5″ coin, but a crest, motto, names and dates need 1.75″–2″. Small text under about 1.5 mm high becomes hard to read, so if your design is busy, go bigger or move some details to the back or the edge.

Coins that people carry every day should stay at 1.5″–2″. Coins for display, awards and ceremonies can be 2.5″ or larger and come in a presentation box or stand.
Larger and thicker coins use more metal and cost more per piece. If budget is tight, a 1.75″ coin with a premium plating, glitter enamel or a special finish often looks more valuable than a plain large coin.

Shields, stars, dog tags and cut-out designs are measured by their widest point. A custom shape needs about the same space as a round coin of that width, so plan the design area accordingly.
