Real Estate Closing Gifts Clients Actually Keep: A Guide to Custom Keychains

The heavy brass key tag on a hotel front desk was never meant to be charming. It was meant to be annoying to carry, so guests would hand it back instead of taking it home. Today, many hotels, motels and boutique inns order the same style on purpose, because guests remember it, photograph it and want to keep it.
This guide is for two kinds of buyers:
It covers which styles suit which properties, how materials compare, what to engrave on the front and back (including a security point most guides miss), and the MOQ and lead times to plan around.
The reasons hotels used big key tags still hold, and guests now see them as part of the stay rather than a nuisance.
That last point matters even for hotels with keycard or keyless entry. A tag that guests want to keep becomes a souvenir, a photo on social media, and a product you can sell in the gift shop.
The shape sets the era your guests feel the moment they pick up the key.
| Style | Look and feel | Best for | Watch out for |
| Motel teardrop or diamond | Classic mid-century American roadside | Motels, retro boutique hotels, merch | Large sizes are bulky in a pocket |
| Oval or rectangular plaque | Traditional, European heritage | Historic hotels, inns, B&Bs | Plain designs can look generic |
| Shield or crest | Formal, heraldic logo display | Grand hotels, private clubs, resorts | Needs a strong logo to work |
| Oversized novelty tag | Bold statement, hard to lose | Properties where keys stay at the desk | Guests may remove the key to carry it |
| Leather flap | Quiet luxury, soft in hand | Luxury and design-led hotels | Shows wear sooner than metal |

Size is a trade-off. A large tag is harder to lose and less likely to be taken, but a guest who has to carry it all day will notice. If keys stay at the desk while guests are out, go bigger; if guests carry keys around the city, keep it pocket-sized. Our keychain size and attachment guide shows how each size looks in hand.
The material signals your property’s positioning and decides how the tag ages after thousands of check-ins.
| Material | Look | Durability | MOQ | Sample | Bulk production |
| Solid brass | Genuine heritage metal; develops a natural patina over time | Very high | 50 pcs | 10–12 days | 15–18 days |
| Zinc alloy (antique brass, bronze, silver plating) | Weighty, classic metal; enamel color possible | High | 50 pcs | 10–12 days | 15–18 days |
| Acrylic | Retro 1960s–70s motel colors, lightweight | Medium; can scratch | 100 pcs | 5–7 days | 20 days |
| Soft PVC | Casual, colorful, flexible | High; waterproof | 100 pcs | 10–12 days | 15–18 days |
| Leather | Soft, understated luxury | Medium; wears with use | 200 pcs | 15 days | 20 days |
Add shipping time to the production times above. For a hotel opening, order at least eight weeks ahead so you have time for one round of sample feedback.
Zinc alloy with an antique plating is the most common choice for vintage-style tags: it gives a heavy, aged-metal feel at a lower cost. Heritage hotels that want the real thing can choose solid brass, which has the same 50-piece MOQ and lead time and develops a natural patina with use. PeaKeen offers 15 plating finishes, including antique brass, antique copper, antique silver and black nickel. The front carries your hotel name or logo and the room number. The logo is made in the mold, so it is identical on every tag. Room numbers are laser engraved piece by piece, which is the cleanest and most durable method: engraved numbers do not rub off however often the tag is handled. Send us your room list and we engrave each tag in order. Room number engraving is charged separately, and the price depends on quantity, so we include it as its own line in your quote.
Keep the room number large and simple. On metal tags, our minimum text height is 1.2 mm and minimum line width is 0.15 mm, but room numbers should be far bigger than that so staff and guests can read them at a glance.
The back is where vintage tags carry a return message, such as “If found, please drop in any mailbox.” Check with your local postal service what return-postage options are available before printing a postage promise. Other useful details for the back:
On Reddit, a guest pointed out a weakness of classic key tags: a lost key with the room number on it tells the finder exactly which door it opens (Reddit). How much that matters depends on your locks:
| Your locks | Recommended approach |
| Mechanical keys | Keep the hotel name and room number for the classic look, but avoid the full street address, and replace or rekey locks when a key goes missing. Some properties engrave an internal code instead of the room number. |
| Keycards or keyless entry | No security risk. The tag is decorative, so put your logo on the front and use the room number only if it adds to the look. Many hotels attach it to the keycard; we also make custom hotel room cards to match. |
See our keychain artwork guide for file formats and Pantone matching.
If guests keep taking your key tags, sell them a version instead. A souvenir tag uses the same design as your room key, without the working key or the real room number, so it is safe to sell.

One mold can serve all of these. Order your room key tags first, then reuse the mold for souvenir versions with different plating or enamel colors. PeaKeen stores your mold free for 2 years, and every reorder within that period extends the storage.

Keys go missing, so order extra tags for every room. A 40-room property ordering zinc alloy tags already needs 50 pieces to meet the MOQ, which leaves 10 spares for the rooms that lose keys most often.
Once the mold is engraved, the shape and raised logo are fixed. Changing them means a new mold and another 10–12 days of sampling. Room numbers and back text are laser engraved, so keep anything that might change, such as a phone number or website, in the engraved area rather than in the mold. Changing enamel colors or plating on metal tags does not need a new mold.
Why are hotel key tags so big?
Traditionally, so guests would leave keys at the front desk instead of taking them. A heavy tag is awkward to carry and hard to lose, and when keys stay at the desk, staff can see which rooms are occupied.
Can each key tag have a different room number?
Yes. The logo and shape are made in a mold, and each room number is laser engraved separately from your room list. Engraving is charged separately based on quantity and shown in your quote.
What is the minimum order for custom hotel key tags?
At PeaKeen, zinc alloy and solid brass tags start at 50 pieces, acrylic and soft PVC at 100, and leather at 200. The MOQ applies to each design.
Should I put the hotel address on the key tag?
For properties with mechanical locks, avoid the full street address. A lost key with your hotel name, address and room number tells the finder exactly where to use it. A return message and a phone number are usually enough.
Do key tags still make sense for hotels with keycards?
Yes, as a design element and souvenir. Many hotels attach a vintage tag to the keycard holder, give tags as welcome gifts, or sell them in the gift shop.
How far in advance should I order?
Allow about 4 weeks for solid brass, zinc alloy, acrylic or PVC and about 5 weeks for leather, plus shipping. For a hotel opening, order at least 8 weeks ahead.
